Scene Around Town: At The World's: Men's Marathon

August 3 was the first day of the 8th IAAF World Championships in Track and Field. The first event was the Men's Marathon. Many roads in Edmonton were blocked off to allow the runners a clear passage from downtown, over Groat Road, through the West End and then back towards Commonweath Stadium, where the opening ceremonies took place later in the evening.

The Men's Marathon happened to go right through my neighbourhood, so I joined my neighbours and stood on the sidelines as a world-class athletic event took place right in our backyard -- literally.

When the camera crews headed down 87th Avenue and the helicopters were heard overhead, the crowd that eagerly gathered in the street knew that the runners were on their way. The camera van below is from China.
